Bread for the Head

A Reluctant Cross

Phil. 3:13-14

I've got to be honest with you. Sometimes I get tired of ministry. As Hanna Whitall Smith puts it in her book, "The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life", my "May I?" of love has at times turned into a "Must I?" of duty. The problem with this happening is that if I don't have a change in attitude I will stop serving all together, and that is not an option.

Smith reminded me just this morning that when our attitudes are right, we'll endure all kinds of burdens and not be taken off of task. I have trained for two marathons. This involves hours and hours of running in training alone. Some of you have endures similar challenges for the glory of your sport. Others of you have endured years of training in your fields of study. So, we all know sacrifice.

What I call a burden within the Faith, in other spheres I call a challenge. Why is that? I think it comes from an engrained false belief that Christianity comes with little to no pain. We have managed or at least I have managed to ignore the many "take up your cross" directives, falling for the destructive lie that Jesus was the only one called to bear a cross.

I need to do more than embrace the truth about my "cross"; I need to view its burdens in an all together new light, to face them as challenges. The next time I start to get side tracked because of some momentary challenge I am going to try to focus on the prize.
